A few years back, stars of TV, film and sport - Laura Carmichael, Michael Sheen and Ade Adepitan - joined our founder Sarah Brown in sharing their stories of the teachers who most inspired them. In a time when the teaching profession has never been more under pressure, and teachers feel undervalued, it's important to celebrate educators and remind ourselves of the crucial part they play in forming individuals and our society. 🙌 Happy #NationalTeacherAppreciationDay! #TeacherAppreciation #NationalTeacherAppreciationDay #TeachersDay #NationalTeachersDay

"I stand as a testament to the belief that education is not merely a privilege, but a fundamental right that has the power to shape lives and inspire change." Our #GlobalYouthAmbassadors come from all over the world and from many different experiences, but they all share the same dedication to education. If you are or know someone aged 18-28 who wants to advocate for education, check out our two-year ambassador programme.

On April 23, 2024, I joyfully marked a significant achievement in my academic journey as I graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Master of Advanced Social Work Practice. Despite the challenges of growing up in Malawi, Africa, where the dream of attending university was overshadowed by harsh living conditions, I cherished education deeply. Moving to Australia brought cultural shock, language barriers, and bullying, leading to disengagement from school. Despite this, my unwavering desire for higher education persisted, driving me forward with renewed determination. Despite facing challenges and bullying in high school, my EAL teacher's unwavering support became a beacon of hope, guiding me through uncertainty. With her mentorship and encouragement from other teachers, I persevered and graduated. Entering university was a momentous occasion, yet one fraught with uncertainty regarding my chosen path. Despite harboring doubts about my future direction, I heeded the advice of my father—a social worker himself—and enrolled in social work at Victoria University. However, the initial enthusiasm waned, giving rise to doubts and contemplation of alternative career paths. Yet, with steadfast resolve, I persisted, eventually discovering a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment within the field of social work. Discovering a profound passion for social work beyond familial expectations, I transformed it into a personal mission to serve with compassion. This journey culminated in pursuing a master's degree, motivated by a commitment to give back by returning to my alma mater and fostering positive change. Notwithstanding the challenges of managing full-time study alongside full-time work, I persisted driven by ambition and determination. Despite the emotional ups and downs, my steadfast dedication to education as a catalyst for change kept me on course. The culmination of my master's degree was marked by a profound sense of accomplishment, further reinforced by the honor of being elected as a Global Youth Ambassador by Theirworld - an organization dedicated to advancing education as a fundamental human right. This recognition served as a testament to my unwavering belief in the transformative power of education and its ability to effect positive change in the world. As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the teachers and mentors who believed in me and saw potential where I could not. Their unwavering support inspired me to pay it forward by returning to the school I graduated from, with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to empowering others to pursue their dreams. I stand as a testament to the belief that education is not merely a privilege, but a fundamental right that has the power to shape lives and inspire change. As I look to the future, I am filled with hope and optimism, knowing that education will continue to serve as my armor, empowering me to overcome obstacles and strive towards a brighter tomorrow.

Luis Benveniste, their Global Director for Education, invited our President, Justin van Fleet, to co-author an article where they outlined that: ⭐ We need to champion quality early years care, not just access 📈 We must increase countries' capacity for early years 📏 More countries need to scale up and improve measurement of early years programmes 💭 To scale, we'll have to innovate 🔗 Let's strengthen the connection between early years and other critical issues; women's empowerment, business, economic growth Which do you think is most important?
