Back to their future: girls return to digital skills classes after Covid delays

They were shut out of their schools for nearly two years. But 1,000 girls and young women in Uganda are loving being back in the classroom and learning digital skills.

They are taking part in Theirworld’s Skills for Their Future programme, which is helping to narrow the digital divide and open up opportunities for female students.

Schools in Uganda were fully or partially closed for 83 weeks because of the pandemic - one of the world’s longest school shutdowns. Now they’re open again and we went to talk to some of the girls who are studying digital literacy and their teachers.

Skills for Their Future and its predecessor Code Clubs have helped more than 3,000 young women gain technology skills across sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. We partner with local organisations to help girls learn skills, schools to deliver quality education and local companies to offer work opportunities.

Welcome Matt! Actor and comedian Matt Lucas becomes a Theirworld Ambassador

We’re delighted to announce that British actor, comedian and TV presenter Matt Lucas has become Theirworld’s latest official Ambassador.
