Mission to Moldova: Education on the agenda as Theirworld meets Ukrainian refugees

Theirworld travelled to Moldova this week to find out how the country is responding to the arrival of 50,000 Ukrainian child refugees and the urgent need to get them into school. We went with Education Cannot Wait - the global fund for education in emergencies - and other key agencies.

Maysa Jalbout, Senior Adviser on Education in Emergencies to Theirworld and an expert on international development, visited the border between Moldova and Ukraine to meet refugee children, parents and government officials. In a live chat from there, she told Theirworld President Justin van Fleet about the amazing support and welcome given to the Ukrainians by the Moldovan people and their leaders.

Maysa said: “They are offering them the services and support they need to integrate. This is absolutely a great start.” But she added that the small country of less than three million people needs more help from the international community. She also discussed how education can be prioritised and the role Theirworld can play in supporting that.
